Subject/Title of Window: Annunciation

Brief Description of Subject: The Annunciation is covered in Luke 1:26-38 (brief synopsis) The angel Gabriel is sent by God to tell the Virgin Mary that by the power of the Holy Spirit she will conceive a son that is to be called Jesus.

In the left panel the angel Gabriel is pointing to heaven and below his feet is a potted lily which symbolizes purity. In the right panel is the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descending on the Virgin Mary, below her are 2 doves probably alluding to the offering for the Jewish rite of Purification which takes place 40 days after the birth of the first born male child.

Comments taken from "Our Stained Glass Windows" c. 1970 "Here one notes, particularly, the humility of the Blessed Virgin and the regal dignity and majesty of the messenger of God, the angel Gabriel. So well has the window been composed that one almost feels the action it portrays."

These are the first two of the twelve Holy Family Windows located in the Epistle Aisle. Comments from "Our Stained Glass Windows" by Aloys Frank Herman c. 1970 "This battery of windows along the north wall tells the story of the Holy Family from the time of the Annunciation to the Coronation of the Virgin Mary.

In order to avoid producing that much-to-be-abhorred dark church, the windows along the north and south walls were designed to be rather light in color, yet sufficient color is incorporated to tell the story and tell it beautifully. This objective has indeed been satisfactorily attained."

These windows were designed by Jonathan Edwards as a free lance job for Willet Hauser Architectural Glass and installed in 1969.

Jonathan Edwards worked for Celtic Studios as a designer and glass painter. He also worked freelance for other studios and taught at Swansea College in Wales until the 1990's. His work is found mostly in churches across south Wales but can also be found in Canada and the United States.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
