Each of the North Clerestories are named for a "Type of Christ" --- a person or an event which foreshadows or prefigures is some way, Christ, or an event in the life of Christ. The artist has chosen to illustrate this with a montage using material found in the cited scriptures below.

Noah

Water, a source of life, was used by God to destroy the world in the Genesis account. Only a select faithful few were spared and given new life after the flood. As Noah and his family symbolize a kind of baptism, the new baptism of Christ (through his water and blood shed for man) secured the salvation of the world. St. Luke records 17:26 Christ's words comparing the evil days of Noah's world to those of the then-present times: "And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man."

Genesis 7:1 Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

Genesis 7:12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Genesis 8:11 And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.

Genesis 9:11 And I shall establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of the flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

Genesis 9:13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

Donna Swanson Taylor, formerly of Detroit won our national competition held in 1975 for the design of the 36 clerestory windows. She will assist in their construction at the J. & R. Lamb Studios in New Jersey, the company selected to execute and install the windows. Taylor is an accomplished musician as well as a professional artist and teacher.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
