Brief Description of Subject: Window description: Window is one of 7 in Chancel of the most important Polish saints. The windows are designed to let in lots of light. The image of St. Florian is partly obscured by the reredos as the window is position in the center of the apse. In the canopy at the top on a shield is the "Dextera Dei" -- right hand of God. St. Florian was a Roman officer posted in what is now Austria. During the Diocletian persecutions he was put to death in 304 for being a Christian. In the 12 Century King Casimir II of Poland asked for some relics of St. Florian to be sent to Krakow. How he became associated with fire fighters is not known. One story is that once when Krakow was burning prayers to St. Florian stopped the fire. The window shows St. Florian dressed as a Roman soldier emptying a pitcher of water on a city that is burning.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
