The Sacred Heart structure symbolized the traditional German national character with its uncomplicated, robust lines. Sacred Heart began as a German parish in 1875.... In 1938 it became the new home for east side African-American Catholics ... Sacred Heart has since grown into one of the most prominent African-American parishes in Detroit with a distinguished history.
