Building Name: Mariners' ChurchStudio Name: Lamb (J. and R.) Co.
City: Detroit
Window Shape: 5 (gothic arched, 2 vertical sections)
Subject/Title of Window: Joshua and David
Brief Description of Subject: According to the book "The Windows of Old Mariners'" by Jean M. Fox, the nave windows on the left side were dedicated to different branches of the Armed Forces. This is the third window and is dedicated to the Army and depicts Old Testament warriors --- Joshua and David. The preliminary watercolor sketch featured the shields of the U.S. Army and the U.S. flag. These however were replaced for the final design. The Army's logo star is seen at the very top of each lancet.
The Star of David is seen above the lancets which in this context symbolizes Old Testament figures.
In the left lancet is Joshua in full battle dress. The scene at the bottom of the lancet pictures Joshua's siege of Jericho which is covered in the 6th Chapter of Joshua --- God told Joshua to march around the city for six days and on the seventh to sound the trumpets. "When the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, 'SHOUT! FOR THE LORD HAS GIVEN YOU THE CITY!' ... When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the walls collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city." The small shields at the top corners of the scene represent the city of Jericho and the instruments that led to the conquering of the city --- a sword and trumpet.
In the right lancet is David with his attributes --- a harp and at his feet a slingshot. The scene at the bottom of the lancet depicts the shepherd boy David slaying Goliath. This battle is covered in 1 Samuel 17 --- The armies of the Philistine and the Israelites were encamped and the Philistine Goliath challenged the Israelites to select one man to fight him with winner take all. The Israelites selected David whose only weapon was a slingshot. "Then David said to the Philistine, 'You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defiled. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand ... Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with the sword and spear; FOR THE BATTLE IS THE LORD'S, and He will give you unto our hands' ". The small shield at the top corners of the scene are a crown (David will be crowned King), and a shield (as King he will become a great warrior).
This window memorializes Hazen Pingree who served in the Army with the 1st Massachusetts during the Civil War. The large shields in this window are those of the City of Detroit and State of Michigan as he served as the Mayor from 1889 to 1897 and the Governor of the State from 1897 to 1901.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
