Building Name: Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Studio Name: Friederichs and Wolfram

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 5 (gothic arched, 2 vertical sections)

Subject/Title of Window: Decorative Nave Window

Brief Description of Subject: The design of the Church placed the overhang of the balcony blocking what would have been a center to this window. Thus the window has only a top part viewable in the balcony and a lower part viewable in the nave.
This window is decorative in nature featuring geometrical and floral designs using pastel colors.
The roundel in the top section of this nave window pictures a bishop's mitre, crosier, and processional cross.
The lower section has a banner designating the donors as August Seidel and Jacob Freda. The Jacob Freda panel was restored by Baxter Art Glass in 2007. At the bottom of the left panel is seen the inscription "Gewidmet von," which translates as "given by." One possibility, this is just scrap glass to fill the space at the bottom. Another possibility, all the windows in the nave originally had this but subsequent restorations removed most of them.

Inscriptions: Gewidmet von
August Seidel
Jacob Freda

Height: 20'

Width: 4'

Type of Glass and Technique: Opalescent Glass, Enamel Paint

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact
