Building Name: Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Studio Name: Friederichs and Wolfram

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 5 (gothic arched, 2 vertical sections)

Brief Description of Subject: The design of the Church placed the overhang of the balcony blocking what would have been a center to this window. Thus the window has only a top part viewable in the balcony and a lower part viewable in the nave.

This window is decorative in nature featuring geometrical and floral designs using pastel colors.

The roundel in the top section of this nave window features the "Eye of Providence," also known as the "All Seeing Eye of God." The Eye is enclosed in an equilateral triangle (the Trinity), and floating on a cloud. The cloud is a symbol for the presence of God, which comes from the Old Testament, Exodus 34:5, "The Lord came down in a cloud."

The lower section has a banner designating the donor as the "Third Order of the Franciscan Brotherhood."

Inscriptions: Dritter Orden F.B.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
