Building Name: Woodlawn Cemetery Community Mausoleum

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 2 (rectangle)

Subject/Title of Window: Boy Jesus

Brief Description of Subject: The top part of this bay window pictures the boy Jesus bathed in divine light with golden angels on either side. Two golden angels surrounding God is found in Exodus 25:18 - 20 --- God directed images of two Cherubim to be built of gold, and placed facing each other at the ends of the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant.

The bottom part features three lenses. The left one has an irish cross. A Christian interpretation of the circle in the cross is eternity --- as a circle has no beginning or end. The middle one is inscribed with Holy Writ found in 1Corinthians 13:13 (KJV), "And now abideth in faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." The right one has an anchor cross. This is a very early Christian symbol for our hope that our belief in Christ will bring us to heaven where God dwells. This has its origin in Hebrews 6:19 (KJV), "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and entereth into that within the veil." (In scriptures, "within the veil" is where God dwells as the Ark of the Covenant was placed in the Temple behind a veil.)

Below the boy Jesus can be seen the "Crown of Life that the Lord has promised to those that love Him," (James 1:12). Also seen is what appears to be a plant --- in keeping with the theme of this window, this would be one that symbolizes eternal life.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
