Building Name: Woodlawn Cemetery Community Mausoleum

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 6 (gothic arched, more than 2 vertical sections)

Subject/Title of Window: The Trinity

Brief Description of Subject: This window surrounds the chapel door. In addition to the two small rectangular windows in the door, the window consists of three panels.

Left Panel: In the four lobed shape at the top is an Irish Cross, also known as a Presbyterian Cross. The circle on the cross has various meanings, as a circle has no beginning or end, it came to symbolize eternal life or God's eternal love; another meaning is a circle is the shape of a head or halo, suggesting Christ's head on the cross. The middle shape consists of an open Bible and a cross, a symbol for the Christian Community. In the bottom shape is the anchor cross, an early Christian symbol for our "hope, as an anchor for the soul," that our faith in Christ will bring us eternal life, (Hebrews 6:19 - 20).

Middle Panel: The three figures of the Trinity. In the left lens is a right hand giving a blessing --- the symbol for the Father. In the middle shape is the triumphal lamb --- in Revelation this is Christ, the Son. In the right lens is a descending dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit which was derived from its appearance in the Baptism of Christ --- John 1:32, "... the Spirit came down from heaven like a dove."

Right Panel: In the four lobed shape at the top are the capital Greek letters Chi and Rho, these are the first two letters of the transliterated Greek word for "Christ." In the middle shape is a cross under the Greek letters "I h s," these are the first three letters of the transliterated Greek word for "Jesus." In the bottom shape are the Tau Cross and the Greek letters Alpha and Omega. These are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet and refer to Christ's description of himself in Revelation 22:13, "I am alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
