Building Name: All Saints Episcopal Church

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Subject/Title of Window: Symbols of a Clergyman

Brief Description of Subject: This window is located in the hallway off the side door. It can be viewed from both the hallway, by light from the Church, or from the Church by a hallway light. This photo was taken from the hallway thus the view is reversed from the view from the Church.

A plaque under the window indicates this window was gifted in memory of the Reverend David Ransom Covell by Mary S. Covell. The images in this window reflect his profession as a clergyman.

The five pointed star at the top symbolizes the five wounds of Christ. Surrounding the cross is a paten and chalice for communion, a bible for preaching the Word of God, and a scallop shell for administering the Sacrament of Baptism. Below the cross are open hands, the pose for directing prayer by the clergy, and a candelabra.

Reverend Covell was a Master Freemason. There is a good chance he became a member of the Rosicrucian Society as that is a prerequisite for membership, and the red rose and cross of gold seen here, is associated with that organization.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
