Subject/Title of Window: A Message to Sardis

Brief Description of Subject: The first three windows in the north side clerestory cover Chapter 3 in the Book of Revelation. Revelation was dictated to John of Patmos by an angel sent by Christ. These windows illustrate the last of Christ's seven letters to be sent to those cities. These letters consist of three parts, an introduction in which Christ identifies himself as the author, a middle section which details concerns Christ has about what is happening in that city, and a last section in which Christ offers encouragement.

A Message to Sardis --- Revelation 3:1 - 6. Phrases in capitals are illustrated in the window.

Introduction: "These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and seven stars." This, along with the inscription "I am the First and the Last," comes from the vision John had in Revelation 1:12 - 19. "I saw SEVEN LAMPSTANDS, and among the lampstands was someone 'like a son of man,' dressed in a white robe ... In his right hand he held SEVEN STARS, and out of his mouth came A SHARP DOUBLE EDGED SWORD [this means he will conquer by his word]. His face was like the SUN SHINING ALL ITS BRILLIANCE ... Then HE placed his hand on me and SAID 'I AM THE FIRST AND THE LAST' [Illustrated with a CROSS in the Greek letters ALPHA  and OMEGA]. The mystery of the seven stars ... and of the seven lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches."

Problem in Sardis: Many are spiritually dead.

Encouragement: "Yet you have few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. THEY WILL WALK WITH ME DRESSED IN WHITE, for they are worthy. He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the BOOK OF LIFE, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his ANGELS.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
