Building Name: All Saints Episcopal Church

Studio Name: Lamb (J. and R.) Co.

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Subject/Title of Window: A Message to Laodicea

Brief Description of Subject: The first three windows in the north side clerestory cover Chapter 3 in the Book of Revelation. Revelation was dictated to John of Patmos by an angel sent by Christ. These windows illustrate the last of Christ's seven letters to be sent to those cities. These letters consist of three parts, an introduction in which Christ identifies himself as the author, a middle section which details concerns Christ has about what is happening in that city, and a last section in which Christ offers encouragement.

Revelation: 3:14 -21 KJV. Phrases in capitals are illustrated in the window.

Introduction: "These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation."

Problem: "Thou art neither cold nor hot ... So then because thou art lukewarm ... I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich ... and have need of nothing; and thou knowest not that [spiritually] thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor and blind and naked."

Encouragement: "... buy of me GOLD tried in the fire, that thou be [spiritually] rich, and WHITE RAIMENT, that thou be [spiritually] clothed; and ANOINT THINE EYES WITH EYESALVE that thou mayest see." [Spiritually eyesalve is the HOLY SPIRIT, seen here with its seven gifts (tongues of fire)].

"BEHOLD, I STAND AT THE DOOR, AND KNOCK: If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come to him, and will sup with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, AND SET DOWN WITH MY FATHER IN HIS THRONE." Also seen on the throne is the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, completing the Trinity. In the mandorla, to Christ's left is a grape vine, I am the vine," John 15:5, and at Christ's feet is a lamp, "I am the light," John 8:12.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
