Subject/Title of Window: History of the Church Part 1, Abraham to St. Paul

Brief Description of Subject: Information from Charles J. Connick Associates worksheet 3401. Planning for four windows in the south nave began in 1952. The subject was to be the history of the Church from the Old Testament to the Michigan Diocese. By 1955 there was some progress on what was to be included. The first window was to start with an Old Testament scene "to establish the relation between Old and New Covenants, and the fact that the history of the People of God in Israel is part of the total history of the Church."

Sometime after 1955, the church switched to the J.&R. Lamb Studios to design and make these windows. Each of the four windows contain eight scenes. For this window there is also a tercet about the Trinity attributed to Christian Rosenkreuz (b.378).

Scene 1: In Genesis 22, God tested Abraham by telling him to sacrifice his only son Isaac. As he was about to slay him, when an angel of the Lord cried out to him, "Abraham!", "Here am I," he replied. Having passed the test he was told to sacrifice a nearby ram instead of Isaac.

Tercet, Verse 1: Ex Deo Nascimur. In God we are born.

Scene 2: Exodus 3, God called out from a burning bush that was not consumed, "Moses! Moses!," And Moses said "Here Am I." God then told him he was to free his people from the Pharaoh. Moses asked God what he is called and God answered "I am that I am." After his people had been freed, God gave Moses the tablets for the 10 Commandments --- the Old Covenant.

Scene 3: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel --- the Major Prophets. The symbols flanking them are a "caduceus," symbol for healing, and a fasces, a Roman symbol for authority.

Scene 4: St. John the Baptist in camel hair clothing per Mark 1:6. "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord," is a prophecy given in Isaiah 40:3 that was applied to John in Mark 1:3.

Scene 5: In Matthew 2, the Magi visit the "King of the Jews," presenting him with gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh. The symbols flanking the scene are the Star of Bethlehem and what looks like a shepherd's crook.

Tercet, Verse 2: In Christo Morimur. In Christ we die.

Scene 6: In Acts 2, after the Ascension, the Apostles and Mary had come together for the Jewish feast of Pentecost when tongues of fire descended upon them, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Scene 7: The Conversion of St. Paul is found in Acts 9, "As he neared Damascus ... suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: and he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me.'" Symbols flanking the scene are a sword symbolizing Paul's death by beheading, and what appears to be an Irish Cross headstone.

Scene 8: From Paul's Epistle, Ephesians 6:11 - 18, "Put on the whole armour of God ... the breastplate of righteousness ... the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit which is the Word of God." Symbols flanking this scene appear to be a tongue of fire and a cross.

Tercet, Verse 3: Per Spiritum Sanctum Reviviscimus. In the Holy Spirit we are reborn.

Inscription at the bottom of the window indicates this window was designed by Katharine Lamb Tait of the J.&R. Lamb Studios. The watercolor sketch was made by her for the Church's approval of the design.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
