Subject/Title of Window: The Presentation of the Virgin Mary

Brief Description of Subject: All five gospel side aisle windows illuminate a scene from the life of the Virgin Mary. This window's scene is the Presentation of the Virgin Mary as can be found in the Infancy Gospel of James Chapter VII. Anne was unable to conceive a child and was in old age. Anne and her husband Joachim prayed to God for a child promising Him if they had a child they would consecrate the child to God for service in the Temple. (story similar to that of Hannah in 1Samuel 1).

Pictured here is St. Anne and St. Joachim bringing their three year child Mary to the Temple to be raised by the priests.

In the predella is a snake wound around a globe. The serpent refers to the sin of Adam as covered in Genesis. Because of that sin henceforth all humans were to be stained by that original sin. However the mother of the Savior was not conceived with the stain of sin --- an Immaculate Conception.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
