Subject/Title of Window: The Annunciation

Brief Description of Subject: All five gospel side aisle windows illuminate a scene from the life of the Virgin Mary. This window's scene is the Annunciation. The event is covered in Luke 1:25 - 38.

The scene is pictured with the angel Gabriel greeting the Virgin Mary telling her that the Lord is with thee, and she will conceive the Savior by the Holy Spirit. At the feet of a humbled Virgin Mary is an open book. Traditionally, the book would be open to an Isaiah prophecy of a Savior or a prayer book.

In the predella is found a container of lily flowers. The white lily is a symbol of purity and chastity. It is often referred to as the Annunciation Lily from a legend that the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary holding a white lily.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
