Subject/Title of Window: The Visitation
Brief Description of Subject: All five gospel side aisle windows illuminate a scene from the life of the Virgin Mary. This window's scene is the visit of the Virgin Mary to Elizabeth who is pregnant with John the Baptist. The entire event is covered in Luke 1:39 - 58. It is best known for Mary's words that make up what is called the Song of Mary (Magnificat) and Elizabeth's words that make up part of the prayer known as the Hail Mary.
Pictured is Elizabeth greeting a humbled Virgin Mary with, "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is that to me, that the mother of the Lord should come to me?" (Luke 1:42 - 43 Douay-Rheims Bible).
In the predella is a fleur-de-lis, an early symbol of the Virgin Mary for her purity and chastity.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
