Subject/Title of Window: The 1st Station of the Cross, Jesus is Condemned to Death
Brief Description of Subject: This is the first of 14 clerestory windows in the Church, seven on each side, which cover the Stations of the Cross. Traditionally at each stop there will be a time for meditation. For these windows the top section covers the station while the bottom section has a meditation for that station.
The first station is "Jesus is condemned to death." Jesus is pictured with bound wrists and wearing a scarlet robe that was placed on him by the soldiers mocking him as "Hail, king of the Jews!" Matthew 27:28. The chalice seen at the top, is one of the Instruments of the Passion --- the Holy Grail, the chalice used at the Last Supper to institute the Eucharist.
The meditation for this station is "It was my sins that wound those ropes around your wrists." Pictured is a bowl and water pitcher which refers to Pilate washing his hands of any responsibility while declaring "I am innocent of this man's blood" Matthew 27:24.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
