Subject/Title of Window: St. Anthony of Padua

Brief Description of Subject: St. Anthony (1195 - 1231) was baptized with the name Fernando Martin in Portugal. He first joined the Augustine Order but when 5 martyred Franciscan were brought back from Africa for burial he wanted to become a martyr and received permission to join the FRANCISCAN Order at their abbey dedicated to St. Anthony of Egypt. Upon joining the Franciscans he changed his name to "Anthony". In his lifetime he was known for his PREACHING and TEACHING of theology; Pope Gregory IX, who heard him preach and admired him for his deep understanding of the scriptures, called him "Ark of the Testament". In 1946 Pope Pius XII named St. Anthony a Doctor of the Church. While Anthony was on his death bed, a friar asked him "What are you STARING AT?" St. Anthony answered "JESUS".

A kneeling St. Anthony is seen in this window as a Franciscan friar staring at Jesus. The book that Jesus is standing on symbolizes Anthony's preaching and teaching the Word of God.

The decorative medallion at the top of the window contains an angel's head surrounded by wings. This medallion is identical to the medallion of the Immaculate Conception window that is located opposite this one in the transept.

At the bottom of the window appears an inscription with the donor's name. The logo of the maker appears at the bottom right corner as "TGA INNSBRUCK." The "TGA" stands for "Tiroler Glasmalerei Anstalt" whose factory was in Innsbruck, Austria. "Glasmalerei" literally translates into English as "glass painting". The company chose to go by the name "Tyrolese Art Glass Company" in the United States.
