Subject/Title of Window: St. Vincent de Paul

Brief Description of Subject: Decorative medallion at the top contains a radiant red crown topped with three lilies. This medallion is identical to the medallion in the St. Elizabeth of Thuringia window that is located opposite this one in the transept.

St. Vincent de Paul (1581 - 1660) came from a poor family. He became a priest and devoted himself to helping the sick and the poor; to that end he established the "Daughters of Charity" and the "Congregation of the Mission" (Vincentians). For his work he became known as the "Father of the Poor". He said that he saw Christ in every sufferer. His main attributes, which are seen here, are a CRUCIFIX and CARRYING A CHILD. He is almost always, as in this window, costumed as a Vincentian -- black skull cap, black cape and cassock also his face is usually pictured as somewhat triangular in shape with a serene expression.

The donor was the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association Branch 78.

Inscriptions: Gift of C.M.B.A. Branch 78

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
