Subject/Title of Window: The Resurrection

Brief Description of Subject: Decorative medallion at the top contains the head of an angel surrounded by wings that vary in shade from green to blue. This medallion is identical to the medallion in the Annunciation window which is located on the opposite side aisle.

The scene of the Resurrection is not covered in scriptures, it picks up the story with the tomb empty on Sunday morning. Artists then are free, pending approval of the Church, to depict the actual Resurrection using their imagination. One of the early prohibitions by the Church was that the resurrected Christ was to have His feet on the ground and not floating in the air. This prohibition was later relaxed. In this window the resurrected Christ, with the stigmata and pointing to heaven, has his feet on the ground at the edge of the tomb, and is carrying a pole with the "Victory Over Death" banner. A beautifully draped angel is seen carrying a palm frond which is a symbol of victory over death. I believe the flowers at the feet of the angel might be poppies as that is another symbol in Christianity for the Resurrection and hence immortal life.

The donor's names, which appear at the bottom, where John and Catherine Blanke.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
