Subject/Title of Window: Jesus Gives Peter The Keys Of The Kingdom

Brief Description of Subject: Except for one, this decorative medallion at the top of the window does not match the pattern or the work of the other aisle and transept windows and was made by the Detroit Stained Glass Works. However the rest of this window was the work of the Tyrolese Art Glass Company. This medallion is identical to the St. Margaret Mary Alacoque window which is located opposite this one.

Jesus giving the keys of the kingdom to Peter is covered in Matthew 16:13-20. Jesus had asked his disciples who they thought the Son of Man is and they named various prophets. However Simon said "you are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God". Jesus replied "Blessed are you Simon .... and I tell you are Peter, and ON THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH, and the gates of Hell will not overcome it. I WILL GIVE YOU THE KEYS of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on Earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on Earth will be loosed in Heaven."

Christ is seen giving keys to Peter, the gold one is the key to heaven and the silver one is the key to earth. Above Peter is seen a rock topped with the dome of St. Peter's Church in Rome. Conch shells are seen at Christ's feet.

Unlike the other windows on the aisle and transept, the donor's name was not inscribed at the bottom of this window.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
