Window Shape: 4 (rounded or rose window)

Subject/Title of Window: Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Brief Description of Subject: This is part of a series of 4 roundels located in the nave that depict the Virgin Mary. The sketch for this series by Wright Goodhue, currently resides at the Rakow Research Library -- part of the Corning Museum of Glass.

The Virgin Mary appeared to the Vicar General of the Carmelite Order, St. Simon Stock, at their priory in Aylesford, England and gave him a brown scapular telling him "This shall be the privilege for you and for Carmelites that ANYONE DYING IN THIS HABIT SHALL BE SAVED."

The Virgin Mary later appeared to Pope John XXII and told him to issue a Papal Bull that granted the Sabbatine Privilege to any Carmelite that wore the brown scapular and followed the rules of the Order.

The window depicts Our Lady of Mount Carmel giving the "Brown Scapular" to a humbled St. Simon Stock who is holding the Aylesford Priory and opposite this, Our Lady appears to Pope John XII who is looking up to her while clutching the Papal Bull that grants the Sabbatine Privilege to wearers of the scapular.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
