City: Detroit
Window Shape: 3 (arched)
Date of Window: 1902
Subject/Title of Window: Ornamental Bell Tower
Brief Description of Subject: There are two of these windows on the lower level of each of the bell towers. This one is located in the bell tower on the epistle side. They are designed to let light in.
The highly stylized pattern used is the fleur-de-lis ---- three lily petals bound together at their bases. Originally the fleur-de-lis was associated with the Trinity (3 petals) but by the 13th Century it was a symbol of the Virgin Mary (flower of the lily).
The initials of the donor were impossible to read as only the tops are visible. Most likely the donor was J.L.P. Hentschel (Joseph Ludwig Paul Hentschell) as the other tower windows were donated by other children of Charles and Mary Hentschel who themselves had donated the "Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane" window.
Inscriptions: GIFT OF J.L.P. HENTSCHEL

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
