Subject/Title of Window: Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Brief Description of Subject: The ceremony of the coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven is not covered in the scriptures, however in Rev.12:1-5 the woman who is wearing a crown is Mary hence she must have been crowned in heaven. The actual ceremony has been a Catholic tradition since the 12th Century.

Comments from "Our Stained Glass Windows" c.1970: The final two large panels completing this battery of fenestration portray the coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Virgin, attended by two angels, fills the one panel, and an angel holding the crown which is to be placed on Mary's head, thus establishing her as Queen of Heaven, is depicted in the other panel."

The logo at the bottom of the left panel contains the name of the maker as well as the date installed.

This is the 11th and 12th of the twelve Holy Family Windows located in the Epistle Aisle. Comments from "Our Stained Glass Windows" by Aloys Frank Herman c. 1970 "This battery of windows along the north wall tells the story of the Holy Family from the time of the Annunciation to the Coronation of the Virgin Mary.

In order to avoid producing that much-to-be-abhorred dark church, the windows along the north and south walls were designed to be rather light in color, yet sufficient color is incorporated to tell the story and tell it beautifully. This objective has indeed been satisfactorily attained."

These windows were designed by Jonathan Edwards as a free lance job for Willet Hauser Architectural Glass and installed in 1969.

Jonathan Edwards worked for Celtic Studios as a designer and glass painter. He also worked freelance for other studios and taught at Swansea College in Wales until the 1990's. His work is found mostly in churches across south Wales but can also be found in Canada and the United States.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
