Window Shape: 2 (rectangle)

Subject/Title of Window: Penance-Epistle Side

Brief Description of Subject: Fourth of the seven sacraments depicted on the epistle side clerestory windows.

The scourging whip as a symbol for the sacrament of Penance stems from Christ being scourged during the Passion. 1Peter 2:24 "... by his wounds you have been healed."  In the sacrament of Penance we confess our sins to Christ (priest) and are absolved of them.

The window was conceived by a master stained glass designer, Marguerite Gaudin of Willet Hauser Architectural Glass.

Comments from "Our Stained Glass Windows" c.1970 -- in the "nave of the church, one notices seven square windows at each side of the clerestory walls .... each window on each side carries a symbol of one of the seven sacraments. These windows are very strong in their coloring because the artist wished to convey the idea of the strength-giving quality of the sacraments. A study of these windows will reveal that they tell their story eloquently."

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
