Brief Description of Subject: Fourth of the seven sacraments depicted on the gospel side clerestory windows.

Three symbols were used to depict the sacrament of Penance:

KEY: -- Matt. 16:19 Christ tells Peter "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on Earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on Earth shall be loosed in Heaven."

RAISED RIGHT HAND  and CROSS -- during the sacrament the priest will raise his right hand over the confessor and make the sign of the CROSS as he recites "I absolve you for your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
The window was conceived by a master stained glass designer, Marguerite Gaudin of Willet Hauser Architectural Glass.

Comments from "Our Stained Glass Windows" c.1970 -- in the "nave of the church, one notices seven square windows at each side of the clerestory walls .... each window on each side carries a symbol of one of the seven sacraments. These windows are very strong in their coloring because the artist wished to convey the idea of the strength-giving quality of the sacraments. A study of these windows will reveal that they tell their story eloquently."
