Building Name: St. John's Episcopal Church

Subject/Title of Window: War and Peace

Brief Description of Subject: During WWII, St. John's created a chapel for families of the men and woman in the Service. The students of their school collected money for a stained glass window which was placed above the Chapel altar and dedicated on May 28, 1944. When their new Church was built in 1957, the window was brought over and placed over the altar in a chapel designed as a tribute to honor those from the parish that served in the Military. Behind the window is the wall of the sacristy, necessitating that the window be artificially lit.

Arch: Army icon with the inscription "Non sibi sed patriae" --- Latin for "not for self, but country." Inscription: "Quit you like men, be strong" (1Corinthians 16:13 - 14 KJV). Borrowed from Paul's admonition to the Corinthians that they must acquit themselves like men and be strong in their faith.

Middle Level Left Panel: Inscription "They loved not their lives, even unto death" (Revelation 12:11 ESV). War (Sword) and Judgement (Scales) are personified by Michael the Archangel. He was victorious in the battle in heaven against Satan (Revelation 12:7 -9) and there is a legend that at the Last Judgement, Michael will be the one that weighs the souls.

Middle Level Right Panel: Inscription: "On earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 2:14 KJV). "Peace" and "Mercy" are personified by an angel holding a flower commonly called a "peace lily."

Predella: Seal of the United States and the Seal of the State of Michigan. Inscription, "A tribute to the members of St. John's Church who served their country in the Second World War. The gift of the Church School."
