Building Name: St. John's Episcopal Church

Studio Name: Willet Hauser Architectural Glass

City: Royal Oak

Window Shape: 2 (rectangle)

Date of Window: 1943

Subject/Title of Window: Resurrection/Commission of the Apostles/Ascension

Brief Description of Subject: This window was designed for this parish's Gothic styled Church which opened in 1926. Subsequently the congregation needed a larger church and replaced it with a modern styled church which opened in 1957, moving the stained glass to the new Church.

This is the tenth in a series of ten windows, consisting of three scenes each, covering the life of Christ, and were placed in chronological order in the narthex. All of the borders on the scenes feature geometrical patterns alternating with small scenes that is some cases relate to the larger scene they border.

Top Scene: The Ascension. Just after Commissioning the Apostles, "He lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven," Luke 24:50 - 51 NIV. In this scene, Jesus, with lifted arms, is seen rising heavenward, surrounded by three Apostles, most likely John, without facial hair, and Peter, are the Apostles kneeling.

Middle Scene: Commission of the Apostles. Just before his Ascension, Jesus tells the Apostles, "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded of you," Matthew 28:19 - 20 NIV. This scene pictures Jesus sending the Apostles away to the ends of the earth to make disciples of all people. The Apostles are armed with the scriptures --- the Word of God.

Bottom Scene: Resurrection. The Scriptures do not cover the actual Resurrection on Sunday morning, but starts with visitors to the empty tomb, thus artists are left to their imagination of how they wish to portray the event. At one time artists were prohibited from portraying Jesus in the air, his feet had to be on the ground as he was coming out of the tomb. This artist has depicted Jesus rising out of the tomb with one guard cowering in fright and one looking skyward.

According to Church records, this window was given in memory of Frederick Henry Macauley and as a tribute to Mrs. Sadie Adams Macauley by their daughter, Mrs. Albert W. Maseles and dedicated July 23, 1944.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
