Subject/Title of Window: The Beatitudes

Brief Description of Subject: The eight Beatitudes begin the Sermon on the Mount and are found in Matthew 5: 1 - 12. Only four are covered in this window.

The top section of the window depicts a seated Christ preaching the Beatitudes, all of which begin "BLESSED ARE THEY." The pictures of the City of God and a cobweb over a chest of riches on earth, support the inscription, " LAY UP FOR YOURSELVES TREASURES IN HEAVEN, WHERE MOTH AND RUST DON'T CORRUPT and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there also your heart be also," Matthew 6:20 - 21.

In the lower section, the inscriptions are from the start of a verse of a beatitude, and the accompanying picture finishes the verse.

Inscription: "BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT,
Depicted: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Verse 3
Inscription: "Blessed are THEY THAT MOURN,
Depicted: for they will be comforted." Verse 4
Inscription: "BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL,
Depicted: for they will be shown mercy." Verse 7
Inscription: Blessed are the PEACE makers,
Depicted: for they will be called sons of God." Verse 9

Between verse three and four, is a lit candle and the inscription, found just after the Beatitudes in Matthew 5: 14 -16, Jesus tells the crowd, "You are the light of the world ... LET YOUR LIGHT SO SHINE BEFORE MEN, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven," KJV.

The predella contains a memorial inscription, and at the very bottom, the maker's signature, "The Willet Studio Phila."
