Brief Description of Subject: This is part of a series of 4 roundels located in the nave that depict the Virgin Mary. The sketch for this series by Wright Goodhue currently resides at the Rakow Research Library --- part of the Corning Glass Museum.

When Palestine came under control of the Saracens, pilgrimages to Mary's house in Nazareth, where the Annunciation took place, were no longer possible. According to legend, in the late 13th Century angels, with stops in between, moved the actual house to Loreto where it is now a major pilgrimage site.

By order of Pope Clement VIII, one of the walls which surrounds the Holy House at Loreto, was to be engraved (translation) "Christian traveler, whom piety has conducted hither, thou beholdest the Holy Loreto House, renowned throughout the world for its divine mysteries and glorious miracles: HERE (the Most Holy) MARY (Mother of God) WAS BORN, HERE THE ANGEL SALUTED HER, HERE THE (eternal) WORD (God) WAS MADE FLESH ......"

Four angels are seen moving the Virgin Mary who is seated on her house.

Inscriptions: HERE SHE WAS BORN, HERE THE ANGEL SALUTED HER,
HERE THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
