Building Name: St. Mary's of Redford Church

City: Redford

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Subject/Title of Window: Archangels of Faith/Hope/Love

Brief Description of Subject: This window is above the side door in the narthex.

Catholic doctrine only recognizes three archangels by name --- Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Non canonical writings would add four more to the list --- Uriel, Raguel, Zerachiel, and Remiel. I do not know the intentions of this artist. In identifying the angels by name, I have restricted my choice to ones in Catholic doctrine.

The top angel carries a cross --- the symbol of faith. Archangel Michael is the defender of faith.

The middle angel carries an anchor -- the symbol of hope. Archangel Gabriel is the angel of hope.

The bottom angel holds a heart --- the symbol of love. Raphael is the angel of love.

Note that from top to bottom you have the angels of faith, hope and love. Which is just 1Corinthians 13:13 "So faith, hope, love remain, these three, but the greatest of these is love."

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
