Subject/Title of Window: Sermon on the Mount and Christ Throwing the Money Changers Out of the Temple

Brief Description of Subject: The canopy features a quatrefoil with a shield in the center depicting the Angus Dei carrying the victory over death banner. The three fleurs-de-lis seen in the cusps symbolize the Trinity --- three petals banded together as one.

The top scene is the "Sermon on the Mount" which is covered in Matthew Chapters 5-7. The inscription is from Matt. 5:16 (KJV) "LET YOUR LIGHT SO SHINE BEFORE MEN, THAT THEY MAY SEE YOUR GOOD WORKS, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

The scene below this is "Christ Throwing the Money Changers Out of the Temple". The story and inscription is found in Matthew 21:12-14 (KJV) "And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all of them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written (Isaiah 56:7), MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED THE HOUSE OF PRAYER, but ye have made it a den of thieves."

At the bottom of the window there are two crowned Christograms "IHC" (Jesus) and "XPC" (Christ) as well as the inscription "In Loving Memory of Rev(eren)d Thomas Clap Pitkin DD Rector of St. Paul's Detroit from 1867 to 1877 died 1887 aged 71" The Reverend comes from a line of men of the cloth and was named after his great grandfather Thomas Clap who was a noted Rector and then President of Yale University which at that time was a college for the teaching of Divinity.
