Subject/Title of Window: Revelation, Window 1

Brief Description of Subject: This is the first in a series of 4 windows with a scene taken from the Book of Revelation and located in the passageway leading into the bell tower.

In Chapter 1 of Revelation, John of Patmos has a vision and in it God tells John to write down everything he hears and sees in that vision and send the writings to seven Christian communities in Asia Minor.

The scene in this window shows John writing Rev. 21:10 ---- and the angel "showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God."

In Christian tradition John of Patmos was identified as John the Evangelist. John the Evangelist's symbol is the eagle --- seen here holding a book. In Rev. 4:5-8 four living winged creatures surround the throne of God --- a human, an ox, a lion, and an eagle. Since early Christianity these were interpreted as the 4 Gospel writers. Many combinations are possible; St. Jerome's choices became the standard --- the "eagle" was to symbolize John. More than the Synoptic Gospels, John's stresses the divinity of Jesus --- it soars heavenly like an eagle.
