Building Name: St. Florian Catholic Church

City: Hamtramck

Window Shape: 2 (rectangle)

Subject/Title of Window: Christmas/Epiphany

Brief Description of Subject: Description: Each sacristy window contains symbols of the important days celebrated throughout the liturgical year starting with Advent. This is the third window in this series which contains symbols for Christmas, celebrated on December 25th and for Epiphany which is celebrated on January 6th. Christmas, the birth of Jesus, is covered in Luke 2:1-20 in verse 14 a host of angels appear to shepherds in the field and proclaim " Glory to God in the highest and on earth PEACE to men of goodwill." The Epiphany, which celebrates the arrival of the three kings (Magi), is told in Matt.2:1-12. The Magi followed a star to Bethlehem, the place of the birth of Christ, and brought gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.  Seen in this window is the Star of Bethlehem the center of which contains a heart with the inscription "Pax" and I believe this heart also serves as the center of a Christmas rose. Below that is 3 crowns, gifts of the Magi, and a shepherd's crook. I was not able to identify the object between the rose and the gifts.

Inscriptions: CHRISTMAS
EPIPHANY
PAX (peace)

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
