Subject/Title of Window: Good Friday/Easter Day

Brief Description of Subject: Description: Each sacristy window contains symbols of the important days celebrated throughout the liturgical year which starts with Advent. This is the 8th window in this series and contains symbols for Good Friday and Easter Day. Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion, is symbolized by the purple (penance) cross and Adam's skull (Christ had to die to atone for Adam's sin). Easter, the resurrection of Christ, is symbolized by a radiant sun and a white cloth draped over the cross. The radiant sun could have many different meanings, I chose that it symbolizes the risen Christ -- Malachi 4:2 " But unto you that fear my name the Sun of righteousness will arise with healing in his wings". A Catholic tradition is to cover the cross after Mass on Holy Thursday and on Easter Day uncover the cross and drape a white cloth on it and leave it there until Christ returns to heaven on Ascension Day. I interpret the dark colored cloth that the skull is resting on to be the cloth that had been covering the cross and was  removed on Easter Day.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
