Brief Description of Subject: This façade window is installed in an area of the narthex that once served as the Baptistery.

Joseph, with bird carrier, and Mary, are looking at Simeon, who is holding the Christ Child. This scene is based on Luke's description of an event that took place at Jesus' presentation in the temple. This event was the first public proclamation that Jesus was the promised Messiah.

Luke 2:22 - 31 (Douay Rheims)
"And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord: As it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord: And to offer a sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons: And behold there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon ... And he had received an answer from the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. And he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when his parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him the custom of the law, He also took him into his arms, and blessed God, and said: Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace; Because my eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou has prepared before the face of all people: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel."
These words by Simeon are known as the "Canticle of Simeon" or in Gregorian Chant, "Nunc Dimittis."

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
