Brief Description of Subject: This decorative aisle window was designed to let light into the Church. It is in the shape of a lit candle symbolizing Jesus --- "I am the light of the world," John 8:12. The window features a shield containing a picture of a fish.
The language of the early Church was Greek, so the oldest symbols would be derived from that language. The word for "fish" in Greek is "ICHTHYS." These letters form an acronym for "(I)esous (CH)ristos (TH)eou (Y)ios (S)oter" (Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior), the core belief of the Christian religion.
