Brief Description of Subject: This decorative façade window was designed to let light into the Church. It is shaped like a lit candle symbolizing Christ --- "I am the light of the world" John 8:12.
The window contains a Christogram for Jesus. The cross is the "I" in "IHS." The New Testament is written in Greek, so that the earliest Christian symbols have their basis in the Greek language. The Greek spelling of their word for "Jesus" is "iota, eta, sigma, upsilon, sigma." Transliterated into the Latin alphabet this becomes "IHSOYS." Thus the first three letters, IHS, form a Christogram for "Jesus."\

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.
All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
