Building Name: Starkweather Chapel, Highland Cemetery

Studio Name: Tiffany Studios

City: Ypsilanti

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Date of Window: 1889

Subject/Title of Window: Newberry Memorial Window

Brief Description of Subject: This window was donated by Mary Ann Starkweather nee Newberry to memorialize her brother John Stoughton Newberry (1826 -1887) and her mother Rhoda Newberry nee Phelps (1793 - 1877).

Through the years this apse window has sustained damages. Damaged areas were simply replaced with whatever glass was available. The lower part of the lancets were completely destroyed and replaced with white and blue glass. At this time, it is not known what was on them, but considering that the two other memorial windows in the chapel have the names of the persons memorialized on the window, it is reasonable to assume this window did too.

Across the top are symbols relating to Jesus. The Greek capital letters Alpha and Omega come from the way Jesus identified himself to John in Revelation 1:8, "I am the Alpha and the Omega." The IHS are the first three letters of the transliterated Greek word for "Jesus," IHSUS." The section below these symbols are ornamental in design.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
