Building Name: St. Florian Catholic Church

City: Hamtramck

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Subject/Title of Window: Visitation

Brief Description of Subject: Each sacristy window contains symbols of the most important days celebrated throughout the liturgical year which starts with Advent. This is the 14th window in that series and contains symbols for the Visitation which was celebrated at the time this window was installed on July 2nd. It has since been moved to May 31st. The bottom part of the window that would have contained the inscription "VISITATION" has been removed to make room for a room air conditioner. The Visitation is covered in Luke 1:39-55 --- brief synopsis --- When Mary told Elizabeth, her cousin, of the Annunciation, the baby in Elizabeth's womb leapt and she was filled with the Holy Spirit; Elizabeth then greeted Mary with the words that now form the prayer we call "Hail Mary" and Mary's response was the words we now call the "Magnificat".

This window contains a monogram that forms the letters in Mary's name as spelled in Latin -- MARIA, and in Hebrew --- MIRIAM. I was not able to identify the symbols above and below the monogram.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
