Subject/Title of Window: Jesus in the Temple

Brief Description of Subject: This is the tympanum window above the west entrance of the Church. Its subject is "Jesus in the Temple" which is an episode in Christ's life covered in Luke 2 --- When Jesus was 12 years old, the Holy Family had gone to Jerusalem for the Passover, and he became separated from his parents, who went looking for him.

"After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking questions. All that heard him were astonished at the understanding and answers." (Luke 2:46-47 KJV)

This very popular and often reproduced image of the youthful Christ is based on the 1881 painting of "Jesus in the Temple" by Heinrich Hofmann. Seen in the background is the Temple of Jerusalem. The border features a floral design --- across the bottom, a grape vine ("I am the vine" John 15:5), and alternating along the side edges, roses (Christ's blood) and flax (royalty, light, and purity).
