Brief Description of Subject: 1. Draughtsman. Shield in the background contains three shields and is the coat of arms of all craftsmen.
2. Astronomer. The figure of an astronomer holding a primitive diagram or plan of the eclipses showing the shadow of the earth caused by the sun falling upon the moon. The group at this feet is a part of the constellation.
3. Scribe. A scribe of the middle ages illuminating a book before the invention of the printing press.
4. Literature
5. Astrologer. The figure of an astrologer with devices of the zodiac embroidered on his gown. An Astrolab is shown hanging in the background. This instrument is not only for stellar but for solar and lunar altitude taking.
