Brief Description of Subject: St. Matthew symbolized by a winged creature with a man’s face because Matthew’s Gospel narrative traces Jesus’ human genealogy. St. Mark symbolized by a winged creature with a lion’s face because Mark’s gospel narrative begins with “The voice of one crying in the wilderness,” suggesting the roar of a lion.
