Building Name: St. Josaphat Church

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 3 (arched)

Subject/Title of Window: Apostle

Brief Description of Subject: Note: The church at some time in the past put a plaque under this window identifying it as the apostle "Matthew". Matthew's attributes are a winged man or angel, money bags, halberd, chest, scales, sword, sometimes portrayed as sitting at a writing desk. This is somewhat possible for this window as the scroll does indicate a writer but do not see a shepherd's crook or crosier in the list of attributes for Matthew.

Description of window: Apostle with a scroll in his right hand indicating he was a writer of scriptures. In his right hand is a shepherd's crook or crozier which symbolizes a bishop. In the Catholic faith, the apostles were the first bishops.

Height: ~10.75'

Width: ~3.33'

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
