Building Name: Sacred Heart Catholic Church

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 5 (gothic arched, 2 vertical sections)

Subject/Title of Window: Marguerite Alacoque's Vision of the Sacred Heart

Brief Description of Subject: The roundel in the canopy of this nave window contains the Christogram "IHS" (Iota Eta Sigma) --- the first three letters in the transliterated Greek spelling of Jesus.

Marguerite Alacoque (1647 - 1690) was a member of the Order of the Visitation of Mary at their convent in Paray-le-Monial. The scene pictured here is based on a story in her autobiography relating that while praying, Jesus (above a cloud indicates God) had appeared to her revealing his Sacred Heart. He wanted a devotion to his Sacred Heart and promised 12 benefits. Her promotion of that devotion was instrumental in its spread around the world. Blessed Marguerite Mary Alacoque was canonized a saint in 1920.

Above the scene is a floral and geometrical design of pastel colors.

In the predella is a banner designating the donors as Wilhelm Stocker and Johann Schroeder. At the very bottom, the left strip has the words "Gewidmet Von" (Dedicated by). This is most likely just a scrap piece and would have no meaning for this window. The bottom right panel was restored by Ann Baxter Glass in 2015.

Wilhelm Stocker
Johann Schroeder

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
