Subject/Title of Window: Judas Maccabeus

Brief Description of Subject: A Jewish family of the 2nd and 1st Century B.C. which led in opposition to Syrian dominance, and in the restoration of Jewish political and religious life. Resisting desecration of the Temple, Matthias a priest, killed a Syrian officer. He had to flee with his sons. Then began a guerilla warfare. The leadership fell to his son, Maccabeus, from whose surname the family is derived. He resisted a Syrian army and renewed Jewish religious life by rededicating the Temple. The feats of Hannukah celebrates this event.
