Subject/Title of Window: Finding of Jesus in the Temple

Brief Description of Subject: Background: The "Finding of Jesus in the Temple" is the fifth of the Joyous Mysteries of the Rosary. According to Jewish law at that time. all adult males were required to come to the Temple in Jerusalem for Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles (Sukkot). Joseph, accompanied by Mary and Jesus, had come to Jerusalem for Passover. The story of what happened is told in Luke 2: 41 - 51. Luke states that Jesus was 12 years old. In Jewish law, a girl becomes a woman at age 12 and a boy becomes a man at age 13. Thus Jesus is still considered a boy. After spending Passover in Jerusalem, the Family starts their 3 day journey back home to Nazareth. After one day, Mary and Joseph discover that Jesus is not with them. They frantically search for him and return to Jerusalem where they joyously find him among the teachers at the Temple. Jesus is astounding the teachers with his grasp of the scriptures.

Description of Window: At top of window is a picture of scales -- the symbol for matters to be judged. Jesus is sitting on the steps at the Temple of Jerusalem discussing scriptures with 5 teachers. He has an arm outstretched to one of the teachers who has his arm outstretched to Jesus as if they are having a dialogue. One of the teachers is sitting in a chair with an open book in his lap and scrolls in a basket at his feet. One of the teachers is behind the steps in thought.

St. John Cantius closed in 2007. This window has been re-purposed to the Church of the Holy Family in Novi, Michigan. In the process the predella panel has been removed.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
