Subject/Title of Window: Ascension

Brief Description of Subject:
Background: The "Ascension" is the second of the "Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary". Surprisingly, considering the event, there is very little in the 4 canonical Gospels on this event. It is covered more extensively in
Acts 1:1-12 -- a book credited to Luke. Condensing from "Acts", 40 days after the Resurrection the apostles met with Jesus at the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath's day walk from Jerusalem (Jewish law only permitted a walk of 3/4 of a mile on the Sabbath). The Lord told them to remain in Jerusalem and wait for the gift that the Father had promised. They asked the Lord "are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel". Christ answered by telling them that "it was not for them to know the times or dates but they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes to them and they will become His witnesses to all the ends of the earth". After this exchange they saw Jesus taken up and a cloud hid them from their sight. Two angels then appeared and told them Jesus was now in heaven.

Description of Window: At top is the "Resurrection Banner" symbolizing Christ's victory over death. The scene below is divided along a diagonal. Above the diagonal is heaven. Christ is giving a blessing -- usually interpreted as a blessing to the whole world. Two cherubs are in seen in heaven -- one is pointing up, the other is praying. Below the diagonal is earth. The location is the Mount of Olives. Pictured are four apostles witnesses to the glorious Ascension. According to Scriptures all 11 of the Apostles ( Judas had committed suicide) had seen the "Ascension". The youngest one is most likely John. I can only guess that the other 3 were the remaining canonical evangelists -- Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
