Building Name: St. John Cantius Catholic Church (closed 2007)

City: Detroit

Window Shape: 6 (gothic arched, more than 2 vertical sections)

Subject/Title of Window: Nativity

Brief Description of Subject: The Nativity is the third of the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. The Nativity story is based on Luke 2: 1-20. Paraphrasing Luke -- the Holy Family has traveled to Bethlehem for the Census. An angel appears to shepherds in nearby fields and gives them the joyous news that a Savior has been born and they are to see him wrapped in cloths lying in a manger. A host of angels then proclaim the great doxology which begins in Latin "Gloria in Excelsis Deo". The shepherds go off to Bethlehem to see the Savior. The window depicts the shepherds viewing the Savior in a stable.

Above the Nativity scene is a roundel depicting the Agnus Dei lying atop a book that contains the seven seals as found in Revelation.

St. John Cantius closed in 2007. This window has been re-purposed to the Church of the Holy Family in Novi, Michigan. In the process of repurposing, the predella panel has been removed.

Inscriptions: Inscription: Ofiarowal Klub Mlodzienca. Translation from Polish: Donated by the Young Men's Club

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
