Subject/Title of Window: St. Paul Preaching at Athens

Brief Description of Subject: At the top of the canopy is a four sided figure shaped in the form of a cross with a shield that has the initials "SP" (Saint Paul).

The scene and the inscription are found in Acts 17:16-34 (KJV). Paul was preaching in Athens and some of the people were curious about the new divinity and his resurrection, so they invited him to explain this new God to them. His explanation begins with verses 22 "Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with the inscription `To The Unknown God'. WHOM THEREFORE YE IGNORANTLY WORSHIP, HIM DECLARE I UNTO YOU.

The memorial inscription in the bottom portion of the window contains a quote from Paul's preaching at Athens. Acts 17:28 "That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: FOR IN HIM WE LIVE, and move, and have our being." Also in this section are two coats-of-arms. The shield on the left on a red field with two gold crossed swords pointing up, is that of St. Paul's. The one on the right appears to have palm fronds --- the symbol for martyrdom.

At the bottom right of this window is the signature "Heaton, Butler & Bayne"

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.

If you have any questions, additions or corrections, or think you can provide better images and are willing to share them, please contact donald20@msu.edu
